N2  - ABSTRACT
The natural resources in Indonesia are lately being exploited increasingly as medicine for both 
pharmaceuticals and agricultural purposes. One of these resources is cananga plants which can be 
used as essential oils as antibacterial ingredients in hand sanitizer products. The essential oil is 
obtained through distillation process, then phytochemical identification is then tested, and its quality 
includes specific gravity, refractive index, and ester numbers according to SNI 06-3949-1995, then it 
is tested for potential antibacterial activity. The hand sanitizer gel with essential oil of cananga flower 
is made in 4 formulas ; the concentration of essential oils of kenanga flower are 5%; 2,5%; 1,25% and 
0,5%. The data that is obtained include physical product, viscosity, pH, dispersion, adhesion, 
organoleptic and antibacterial activity tests. The results then showed that hand sanitizer gel with 
kenanga flower essential oil had antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. From the 
organoleptic test, it was concluded that the hand sanitizer gel with a concentration of 5% essential oils 
of kenanga flower is the most optimum who had a pH of 5.75; viscosity of 4120; spread of 5.5 cm2 and 
adhesion power of 18.33 seconds.
