The purpose of this study was to obtain the optimal of calcium concentration on culture media to support vertebrae ossification, growth, and survival of nilem carp larvae. The research was carried out from June to August 2018. The treatments consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications. The water hardness levels used as a treatments were A) 80 mg / L, B) 100 mg / L, C) 120 mg / L, and D) 140 mg / L. The nilem carp larvae with 1 day old were used as a fish test. The fish were cultured in the fiber tanks. The density of nilem carp for each tank was 20 fish/L. fish fed Artemia and artificial diet that containing 38% protein. The parameter observed in this research were ossification percentage of vertebrae, absolute length growth, absolute weight growth, and survival. The observation of vertebrae ossification, samples of fish were stained using Alizarin Red. The result showed that the best ossification percentage of vertebrae, absolute length growth, absolute weight growth, and survival found at C treatment (120 mg/L of hardness) compared to the others treatments (P<0.05). Water quality such as temperature, pH, DO during the culture were within the optimal range for nilem carp culture. Utility of shell flour from local mussel (P. exilis) is fruitful to improve vertebrae ossification, growth, and survival that recommended of 14 mg/L CaCO3 concentration in the culture media.
