"ABSTRACT\r\nWriting is one of English skills which enables students to write down their ideas.\r\nIt is very beneficial because it can facilitate other activities during learning\r\nprocess. Among kinds of texts taught by the teacher during writing activities is\r\nrecount text. Recount text is a text that retells about event, experience and action\r\nin the past. In writing recount text one of the grammar that student has to pay\r\nattention is past tense because tense determines when the event is happened.\r\nTherefore, tense has a significant role in enhancing students writing skill. The\r\npaper entitled “The Correlation between Students’ Understanding on Past Tense\r\nand Their Ability to Write Recount Text” is intended to find out whether there is a\r\ncorrelation between students understanding on past tense and their ability to write\r\nrecount text. The research population is the tenth grade students of Senior High\r\nSchool 10 Bogor, with 179 students as the sample. They were asked to do two\r\ntests, the first test was past tense test, divided into 2 parts: the first part consisted\r\nof 10 questions and the second part consisted of 20 questions. The second test was\r\nwriting recount text, the students had to write down a recount text based on the\r\ntopic given in 100-200 words. In conducting this research, the correlation method\r\nwith Ex Post Facto design especially in Correlation Design using Pearson Product\r\nMoment formula was used. The result of r- calculated is (0,102) and the result of\r\nr- table is (0,147), so the value of r-table is higher than r-calculate. It means that\r\nthe alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. Therefore, there is very low correlation\r\nbetween students’ understanding on past tense and their ability to write recount\r\ntext.
