Abstract

The title of this study is The Montessori Method in the Teaching Reading to Young Learners: A Descriptive Study. This study aimed to answer the research question: How was the Montessori Method implemented in teaching reading to young learners? This study explored Montessori reading activities, focusing on letter recognition, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. A qualitative approach was chosen for this study. The data were collected through applying classroom observation and collecting documentation. The research was conducted at one private Montessori school in Bogor. This study involved two teachers and upper-preschool class students. The findings showed that a phonics-based, multisensory approach supported children in learning to read independently. Teachers guided students through questions and provided support, which helped them become more independent and aware of the sounds in words. The children engaged in reading activities during their daily work cycle and chose tasks based on their interests and readiness. The prepared environment supported this routine and encouraged independence and focus. This study concludes that the Montessori Method was implemented in teaching reading through phonics-based and multisensory activities supported by teachers' guidance and a prepared environment.
