Abstract

English is one of the international languages that is used in several countries to communicate. Therefore, English is one of the language skills that must be mastered. One of the skills that must be mastered is speaking. Storytelling technique is a common way that can help students in improving their speaking skills and helps teachers to identify the level of the student's comprehension of what they listen to or read. Thus, research aim is to describe benefits & challenges of storytelling in teaching speaking. This research used qualitative research with a narrative inquiry method. The first step is observation, followed by narrative inquiry through an interview process between researchers and participants. This was done with a Teacher of Private Course. The benefits and challenges about storytelling. From the results of observations, the students involved well in the learning process. The benefits can be seen by the students' interest in learning English increases with the use of storytelling. It can be concluded there are more benefits than challenges in using storytelling in learning speaking, especially narrative text. From the teacher’s point of view, the students understand the material being studied because they are directly involved in the learning process. Keywords: storytelling, narrative text, speaking.
