Abstract

Learning English is essential since it's required in various professions and aspects. This paper aims to investigate students' difficulties in learning English in junior high school. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Cicurug. The writer used purposive sampling to determine classes or participants who experienced difficulties in learning English. The participants of this research were students of grade 8-I. A descriptive qualitative method is applied in this research. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and interviews. The writer constructed 15 statements for the questionnaire and 15 questions for the interview regarding students' difficulties in learning English. In addition, a teacher from grade eight also participated in the interview session to provide more information about students' difficulties in learning English. Based on the results of the research, students experience difficulties due to the lack of vocabulary known, thus it has an impact on inhibiting students in mastering English skills in both productive and receptive skills. In addition, there are internal factors such as some students are not motivated or interested in learning English and students are indicated to be slow in learning English. External factors also affect students' difficulties in learning English. Improper teaching techniques make students bored. Keywords: English Skills, Junior High School, Students Difficulties
