vocabulary learning?”. The research was conducted in SMAN 8 Bogor and the
participants are 34 first grade students. The researcher used qualitative research
with a narrative inquiry method. The data were collected through questionnaire,
reflective journal and interview. The result of this study shows that there are three
challenges and three opportunities faced by students in using captioned video in
vocabulary learning. The challenges are seeing some of the vocabulary they have
recently encountered; most of them feel that their attention is being divided because
they have to look between the video and the subtitles; and they frequently open the
dictionary when they come across vocabulary that they find difficult to understand.
The opportunities are using captioned videos to learn vocabulary can enrich their
vocabulary, and they feel motivated when they come across new vocabulary while
watching the videos. Therefore, in conclusion, students face challenges and
opportunities in using captioned video in vocabulary learning.
