"This research investigates the cognitive factors contributing to speaking anxiety\r\namong vocational high school students learning English as a foreign language. The\r\nresearch question is: What are the cognitive sources of EFL speaking anxiety among\r\nvocational students? The study aims to explore how cognitive aspects such as fear\r\nof incomprehension, familiarity with the genre, interlocutor-related anxiety, and\r\nlanguage processing demands affect students' anxiety in speaking English. This\r\nstudy used a qualitative descriptive method. The research was conducted at SMK\r\nBhinneka Nusantara with 23 tenth-grade students as participants. Data were\r\ncollected through questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that students\r\ncommonly experience anxiety due to unfamiliar topics, lack of experience with\r\ndifferent speaking genres, fear of negative judgment from listeners, and limited\r\nlanguage proficiency. These challenges often lead to hesitation, low confidence,\r\nand avoidance of speaking tasks. However, some students try to manage their\r\nanxiety through strategies like seeking clarification or continued practice. In\r\nconclusion, cognitive factors play a significant role in triggering EFL speaking\r\nanxiety. Enhancing students’ topic understanding, increasing exposure to various\r\nspeaking tasks, and providing a supportive learning environment are essential to\r\nreduce anxiety and boost students' speaking confidence.\r\nKeywords: Cognitive Factors, EFL, English Speaking, Qualitative research,\r\nSpeaking Anxiety, Vocational Students"^^ .
