Abstract
English subject is taught to the students in Junior High School, Senior High School, Elementary School, even to preschool and toddlers. Teaching English in this level is to introdce vocabulary. This research aims to find out the strategy that teachers use in introducing vocabulary to toddlers. This research applied descriptive qualitative approach which is conducted at BILI course in Blossom class. There are two students who are 3-4 of age and the two English teachers as the participants. Moreover, the instruments of this research are classroom observation, interview, and documentation. One of the ways in introducing vocabulary to them is providing visual media that students can see, touch, and feel. It helps them a lot in understanding the material. Based on the result of the research, the teachers present pictures, videos, gesture, and verbal language, so they know and understand how to sound that word clearly and they can guess the word or meaning of it. According to the data analysis, it can be concluded that there are several strategies that teacher applies in introducing vocabulary to toddlers; they are guessing meaning using picture, gesture or verbal language, similar words and students’ background knowledge and students’ past experience.
