Abstract

ABSTRACT In teaching English to young learners, especially when introducing the new vocabulary, teachers have to consider the young learners’ unique characteristics very carefully. Moreover, teachers should be able to choose an appropriate media to make the teaching and learning process more exciting and also to stimulate the students to learn. Realia is actual objects and replica of the objects which are brought into a classroom as examples or as aids to be talked or written about and used in teaching. It is useful to teach young learners the meaning of words. This research is aimed to find out how realia is used in teaching vocabulary for young learners. The research was conducted at SD Pertiwi Kota Bogor. There were 29 students from each class of II-A and II-E, and also one English teacher who participated in this research. The writer used qualitative approach and descriptive method. The data were taken from documentation, classroom observation and interview. The results of this research showed that the teacher used several steps and two techniques in teaching vocabulary for young learners by using realia. In addition, there were two kinds of realia used by the teacher of young learners to teach vocabulary. Those kinds of realia were the real objects and the replica of the objects.
