Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to find the effect of using buzz group discussion on students’ speaking ability. In speaking english, the students are expected to be able to can carry out conversation with others, give the ideas and exchange information with others by mastering the speaking. Unfortunately, the students get difficulties to gain their self confidence. For that reason, they need an appropriate technique in learning english to help them build up their confidence. The research was conducted to the second grade of Junior High School at Daaaruttaqwa Integrated Boarding School. There are 28 students from class 2FA taken as the sample by random sampling using lottery system. In conducting this research, the researcher applies pre-experimental as a method and one group pre-test post-test as a design. She gives a pre-test, three times treatments and a post test to the students. Oral test is given to measure the students’ ability in speaking. The data are analyzed by using t-test formula. From calculating the data, she found the t-test value 15.35, meanwhile the t-table value is 2.052 at significant level 0.5 with the degree of freedom (df) is 27. It is found that the t-calculated is higher than of t-table (15.35 > 2.052).This means that Ha which states that there is significant effect in using group discussion to teach speaking is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant effect of using group discussion to teach speaking rejected. In other words, group discussion can be used as an alternative to teach speaking.
