Abstract

Having good speaking ability is not automatically achieved by the students. They need to have additional learning to help them empower their speaking ability, and one of them is by applying an appropriate learning strategy. That was why the research was conducted to find out the learning strategies that were mostly applied by high achiever students of English Focus Club, the extracurricular program at one of Junior High Schools in Bogor. The participants of the research were chosen purposively. This research used descriptive method for words were mostly used rather than numbers. There were three data collection techniques administered including observation, questionnaire, and interview. Those instruments were transcribed and analysed to find out the information. The result of the analysis shows that there are five strategies used by the students, they are social strategy which was applied by 81.2% respondents, affective strategy that was applied by 77.1% respondents, cognitive strategy that was used by 7.3%, and mnemonic strategy that was applied by 8.3%, and compensation strategy that was applied by 5.2% respondents. Stand on the result, it was found that the frequent strategies used by the students are social strategy and affective strategy. Keywords: Learning Strategy, Speaking ability
