Abstract

ABSTRACT The title of the research is “Students’ Strategies to improve Their English Language skills”. The aim of this research is to find out the strategies of students to improve their English Language skills. The question of this research is “what are student strategies to improve their English Language skill?”. This research was conducted to the students of the first semester English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences of Pakuan University. Qualitative approach and Descriptive method are applied to describe the types of students’ strategies. The data were gained by distributing questionnaire to the students in leaning speaking skill, interviewing some selected participants and also the lecturer who teach them speaking skill The research’s results show that the dominant type of students’ strategies to improve their English language skill, Based on the result from questionnaire, and interview. it was found that all strategies are used but cognitive and social strategies are dominant. As the suggestion, the researcher would like the students in this case students should concern about their types of strategies and try to overcome their own strategies. They need to add more knowledge and more practice about the pronunciation or vocabulary in speaking skill. Moreover, it would be good for students to relax their mind when they do their speaking skill. Keyword: learning strategies, speaking skill, types of strategies.
