Abstract

Stress is the emphasis given to a particular syllable within a word or to a particular word within a group of words. Some students even college students still make mistakes and errors in emphasizing stress in a syllable. If the errors are not revealed and anticipated, the writer is afraid if the errors will be continued. This paper entitled “Students' Error in Emphasizing Stress in a Syllable” is aimed to find out what kind of errors do students make, and what is the cause of the error. This research is conducted to the first semester students of English Education Study Program, FKIP, Pakuan University. There are four classes chosen by the writer and the number of the students is as many as 112 students. The writer uses purposive sampling technique in conducting this research and takes 29 students who had low score in Pronunciation subject as the sample and uses descriptive method to describe kinds of error that made by the students in emphasizing stress in a syllable and the causes why it happened. The main data are gained by analyzing students‟ test in emphasizing stress in a syllable, questionnaire, and interview. After analyzing the data, questionnaire and interview, it is concluded the kinds of errors found are pronunciation and development errors. Meanwhile, the cause of error is fossilization.
