ABSTRACT In learning English, students are expected to be able to speak, write, read, and listen in English. Sometimes they face many difficulties when they have to do those four skills due to lack of vocabulary mastery, therefore they need a strategy to be able to increase their vocabulary mastery. In this research, the writer invitigates the effect of using movie subtitles in students’ vocabulary mastery. The research was conducted to the eight grade students of SMP Kosgoro Bogor and 18 students were taken as the sample. Pre-experimental method and one group pre-test and post-test design was chosen as the research method and design. After that, the writer calculated the data, and the t-test result is 5.41 meanwhile the t-table value is 1.74 at significant level 0.05 with the degree of freedom is 17. It can be concluded that the result of t-test is 5.41 > 1.74. Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means video subtitles affect the students’ vocabulary mastery. Keywords : video subtitles, vocabulary mastery
