Abstract

Comparative Analysis of the Effectiveness of Marker Based and Markerless Augmented Reality Methods in Learning Media Sela Juniasti Shofwah1 , Prihastuti Harsani2 , Agung Prajuhana Putra3 1,2,3 Computer Science, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, University Bogor, West Java, 16143, Indonesia Abstract Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that can be utilized to increase students’ interest in reading by combining virtual and real-world objects simultaneously. AR offers two methods that can be implemented as learning media: marker based and markerless. This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of both methods. The application was developed using Unity and the EasyAR SDK, adopting the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) method. The evaluation involved technical validation (distance and lighting), device compatibility, and user usability. The evaluation involved validation testing with distance and lighting as indicators, as well as usability testing. Usability testing was conducted with 24 students using the topic “Food as an Energy Source.” 17 out of 24 students preferred using the marker based method. In the validation test, the marker based method failed to display objects at a distance of 60 cm under all lighting conditions and also failed at 50 cm with lighting intensity of 96 lux. In contrast, the markerless method successfully displayed objects under all test conditions. The marker based method also required more time to display objects compared to the markerless method, which was able to display objects in just one second.
