Abstract

The title of this research is “Students’ Errors in Constructing Active Interrogative Sentences into The Passive Voice of Simple Past Tense”. The aim of this research isto identify, describe and analyze the types of errors made by students in constructingactiveinterrogative sentences into the passive voice of simple past tense. Besides, the research aims toinvestigate and find out the most students’ type of errors. The research is conducted to the fourth semester students of Pakuan University, Bogor. In conducting this research, descriptive method is used. Meanwhile, purposive sampling technique is used by taking one class as the participants. To gain the data, students’ work, questionnaire and interview are collected. Students’ worksare taken from the result of pre-research, closed questionnaire was distributed to the students and one of lecturers who taught passive voice in “Exploring English Structure” subject at the third semester was interviewed. The four types of errors happen when the fourth semester students constructed active interrogative sentences into the passive voice of simple past tense in students’ works. It is similar to their confession in the questionnaire and the results of the interview to the lecturer who taught passive voice at the third semester as well. However, the most appearingstudents’ type of errors is misordering error. Therefore, the writer suggests that the students should learn and practice more about constructing sentences correctly especially in passive interrogative sentences of simple past tense.They must know how to differ auxiliary verb “was” and “were” which is in accordance with the subject.On the other hand, lecturers are expected that through this research they can get an overview that there are still many students who do not understand how to construct active interrogative sentences into the passive voice correctly especially in the form of simple past tense and most of themare still confused to place the subject and object appropriately.
