Abstract

The paper entitled “The Correlation Between English Students’ Tenses Knowledge And Their Basic Writing Achievement” is intended to find out whether there is a correlation between Students’ English Tenses knowledge and their Basic Writing Achievement. The research population is first Semester Students of English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Educational Sciences, Pakuan University. 40 Students were taken as the sample and they were asked to do two test. First the tenses knowledge test focuses on present tense, past tense and future tense. The writer made 50 multiple choice question tests. While secondary data source is a source of data that is taken from the students’ basic writing score of the final examination. In conducting the research, the correlation method with Ex Post Facto design especially in correlation design using Pearson Product Formula was used. The result of r calculated is (-0002) and the result of r-table (0.811). So the value of r-table is higher than r-calculated. It means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. Therefore, there is a very low correlation between Students’ English Tenses Knowledge and their Basic Writing Achievement. In conclusion, students’ who are good at tenses knowledge are not always good at basic writing achievement
